Adrianna Kinal is not as flamboyant or flashy as some of the other emerging designers we have met, she’s really quite simple. Her slow and steady approach to her independent line of lingerie basics and knits, is gaining her recognition in her native Canada and here in the states. The 23 year old started her design career as a four year old trying to “revamp” her mother’s fur coat. Mom, not all too thrilled, has still supported her daughter’s creative ventures through the years. Her parents, immigrants from Poland, settled in Canada. This gave Adrianna a strict but fair background. She says she once rebelled, but as she looks back, wouldn’t change a thing. After high school, Adrianna moved to Los Angeles on a visa to attend The Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising. During her last year, she began interning for Las Vegas Jean Co. designing denim jeans, skirts, jackets and knit tops. Afterwards, she worked for US BOYS (a junior line) and did contracted pattern design for a sportswear line. PD: You cut your mom’s fur coat?A: I did, when I was four years old I decided to trim it. When her visa expired, she moved back to […]
It all started as a blog post that reviewed Ashley Paige’s Spring 2006 fashion show. A month later, having viewed our review, Paige left a message on our blog messageboard. At first we weren’t sure if it was indeed the designer, as the language used in the rebuttal was very strong. We sent an e-mail confirming her identity. Confirmed, it was definitely Ashley. At the last minute, we decided we couldn’t pass up the chance to interview her. As evidenced by her comments on our blog, Ashley Paige never minces words. She’s not the typical fashion designer. She grew up in less than stellar conditions, persevered and is now looking forward to the future. In her exclusive interview with Papierdoll, she talks about designing, stripping and her recent lash-out at us. Read below. PD: What are you doing right now? AP:I’ve just lit a candle and I’m making coffee. I love to burn candles all the time. PD: Why do you burn candles all the time? AP:I am a very spiritual person. I’m a witch. A good witch. To me, burning candles signify startng life. I burn candles in my store, all different kinds of candles. Right now I have […]
Joanna Mastroianni has been designing for over fourteen years. Numerous Hollywood starlets have long called on her to design and often walk the red carpet in Joanna’s pieces. This year marked her second appearance at New York Fashion Week and she made the most of her sophomore effort. You only need one word to describe her spring collection – breathtaking. With vibrant colors and stunning pieces that make it feel good to be a woman, Mastroianni wowed the audience in a year of less-than-stellar collections. Though it was fall outside, inside Joanna’s studio spring had arrived. A graduate of the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City, Joanna began her career on 7th Avenue. In 1987, she started her own label after noticing a void in eveningwear. Her meteoric rise to fame came after designing her first collection when a sexy evening dress designed by Mastroianni was worn by Michele Pfeiffer in the movie Tequila Sunrise. Since then, countless collections with the signature timeless design have come from Joanna’s studio. Our arrival at her studio was announced by Mastroianni’s dog dressed in big yellow bow. (I believe she is a Pomeranian, but could be mistaken). Natasha, who is as […]
I finally make it to the Starbucks that Jeff and I have decided to meet at and see exactly what I had thought of Jeff to be, a dapper and handsome young man dressed casual cool and ready for any questions (at least I hope) that I may throw to him.
