[ozy_one_half] Academy of Art University has held a show at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in New York for as long as I can remember (just a little after 7th on 6th organized the whole thing). Since that time, Academy of Art University students have been a bellwether for where American fashion goes. They are, after all, the next generation of designers. But let’s be clear as to the purpose of the collection. It is a showcase for the school. In the short-term, not many of the collections will end up in stores. They’re conceptual at best; but the designers do end up either branching off on their own or joining an established house. For what it is though, the Academy of Art University shows the promise in its graduate students as full-on independent designers. [/ozy_one_half] [ozy_one_half_last] This Fall 2014 collection showing is no different. You had elaborate dresses, asymmetrical coats, a variety of prints displayed on dresses, skirts, coats and more. Some of the stronger showings included a brown cowl neck knit sweater, paired with heavy linen ankle crop pants. There was also an over-sized knit in deep violet with a beautiful wool skirt. Another favorite was a pullover wool coat with exposed arms below the elbow and mid-sized pockets. Finally there was a hooded floor length coat that was also highlight of this collective show. I almost want to challenge Academy of Art University to put these items in retail channels. I believe some (not all) would do well primarily because the designers, have an appeal that will carry on into their professional careers. [/ozy_one_half_last]
A good showing from a handful of designers that portend of things to come in the fashion world. Definitely a treat to see.
