Recently I met the incomparable and incredibly tall and beautiful Venus Williams. She was in NYC presenting her Fall ’13 EleVen collection which is her higher-end line of athletic wear (think Lululemon, I was told) she has designed since 2007. You don’t have to be a tennis pro to wear the styles however. The collection is also ideal for yoga, pilates or just looking incredibly chic while running your daily life…especially if you are one who likes to be comfortable, but look put-together.
After I perused the extensive line of python prints, bold florals and solid items in black, white and feminine pink and noshed on some brilliant vegan bites created by Venus’ chef, Lauren VanDerPool, I had an opportunity to sit with the now 32 year-old tennis legend. She and her sister are attributed in changing the game of tennis, and now Venus wants to change what we wear while playing. Long gone are the days of tennis whites, especially if she has anything to say about it.
While she studies fashion trend reports and keeps up on what’s coming down the runway, not all of it translates into athletic wear. However, for this, her fifth season she was influenced by tie-dye, water color, florals and python prints…her favorite motifs. “I’ve always loved florals and wanted to incorporate them into the collection for this season,” commented Venus. “My floral print is very bold and bright which looks best when blocked with white or black,” she added.
The totally hands on designer also informed me she had just wrapped up her spring/summer ’14 collection and had just seen the samples 10 minutes before we spoke. She was positively giddy about it, but couldn’t share any more than that. No worries, I’m sure we will see her wearing it on the courts soon enough. on the courts.
Look for her spring ’13 collection in stores later this month which encompasses tie-dye prints, nautical stripes and painterly print florals.
