WASHINGTON, — A unique fashion collection designed specifically for women who have experienced breast cancer is being launched today by the Alloro Collection. Alloro’s designs address the changes in bodily contour, comfort and appearance that occur during breast cancer treatment – all without sacrificing style.
The Alloro Collection is the brainchild of Laurel Kamen of Washington, D.C., who in 2011 underwent a double mastectomy. While preparing for surgery, she discovered that sophisticated clothing was not available to women recovering from breast cancer treatment. Joined by her friend and Alloro co-founder, Christine Irvin , of Stamford, Conn., the two were determined to correct this fashion omission, and the Alloro Collection was born.
“Cancer drains the color out of women’s lives,” Kamen said, “and we want to put color back into women’s lives with this collection.”
Beyond the punishing physical ordeal experienced by women with breast cancer, the journey back can also be challenging psychologically and financially. Said Irvin, “We always envisioned Alloro as a way to raise money for breast cancer prevention and research and plan to donate 25 percent of profits to those related organizations.”
The first organization slated to receive the Alloro partnership donation is the Prevent Cancer Foundation. Its mission is saving lives through cancer prevention and early detection through research, education, advocacy and community outreach.
“We were very impressed with the breast cancer prevention and research programs that the Prevent Cancer Foundation offered, as well as the community outreach programs developed and supported by the organization, such as the Mammovan,” said Laurel Kamen , referring to the mobile mammography unit, which provides free screenings to women in greaterWashington area community centers, clinics and churches.
