CA, United States (AHN) – A selection of clothes belonging to the late Whitney Houston fetched $80,00 at an auction Saturday in Los Angeles.
The Beverly Hill bidding took place just a few weeks after and a few blocks from where the singer died by drowning in a bathtub at the Beverly Hilton just hours before the Grammys.
Up for auction were five of Houston’s dresses and three ensembles at Julien’s “Hollywood Legends” auction.
A bustier embellished with rhinestones and pearls sold for $19,200, and a grey velvet gown Houston wore when she attended the Clive Davis Pre-Grammy Party with the husband Bobby Brown in 1996, went for $11,520, according to the auction house’s website.
Two pairs of earrings and a vest worn in the diva’s 1992 movies “The Bodyguard,” fetched a total of $8,500.
However, Houston’s items were not the most in-demand at the auction.
A coat worn by Clark gable in “Gone With the Wind” was sold for $58,000. The fabled actor wore the jacket as Rhett Butler in the 1939 classic. The black and white wool herringbone coat included a hand-inscribed that read “Clark Gable 5-9-39.”
Grace Kelly’s Dior gown went for $72,000, and Charlie Chaplin’s famous bowler hat sold for $57,600. Chaplin’s signature metal-tipped trademark cane bought in another $11,600.
