Arlington, VA, United States (AHN) – The amount of money spent on attending the prom, the springtime high school dance that causes butterflies and sparks romance, is getting pricier every year.
USA Today reports that data released Friday from a survey conducted by credit card giant Visa shows that this year families with teens are expected to spend an average of $1,078 on prom, an increase from $807 a year ago.
The biggest chunk of the money will be spent on the dress, tux and limo. And then there is hair, makeup, flowers, shoes, jewelry and other accessories.
The increased spending to never-before-seen levels is attributed to influences from celebrities, reality TV and social media.
Some experts say that with many adults delaying marriage, prom has replaced weddings and coming-out parties, and is now a prominent and important juncture in a young adult’s life.
Regional disparities are evident. Residents in the Northeast and South spend the most at $2,000 and $1,047 respectfully. Families in the West and Midwest will shell out an average of $744 and $696 respectfully, the survey noted.
Yes, the prom is not about how you dance; it’s about how you look.
