Paris, France (CNS) – British fashion designer John Galliano has been arrested and briefly held in Paris for allegedly verbally assaulting and making anti-Semitic remarks to a couple. High fashion clothing label Dior has suspended Galliano, their chief designer, pending the outcome of the police investigation over the incident.
According to various reports, Galliano, 50, was drinking at a bar when he verbally accosted a couple sitting on a café terrace. It wasn’t clear what started the altercation.
He was arrested and taken to a police station, where his alcohol level was found to be just over the legal limit. He was detained and released pending charges being filed.
His lawyer, Stephane Zerbib, told AFP that he “formally denies the accusations of anti-Semitism made against him.”
Galliano, who has been announced to design supermodel Kate Moss’ wedding gown to fiancé Jamie Hince later this year, has been suspended by Dior pending the outcome of the police inquiry.
