New Delhi, India (CNS) – Indian actress Aishwarya Rai is reportedly threatening to sue if the rumors that the India version of Elle magazine has lightened her skin color on its cover are true. She is apparently in “disbelief” over the alleged color doctoring that she is planning to take legal action against the magazine if there’s proof.
The former Miss World, 37, graced the cover of the fashion magazine for its December issue. However, fans were outraged after noticing that Rai’s skin has been lightened. They feel that her image has been altered to appease the Caucasian standards of beauty.
Rai has been taking care of her ill father so she hasn’t been able to verify the rumors. But according to the Times of India, the actress was upset about the possible photoshopped picture.
A source told the paper, “Aishwarya’s first reaction was disbelief. She believed that these things don’t happen anymore. Not in this day and age when women are recognized for their merit, and not for the color of their skin.”
“She is currently verifying this skin-whitening allegation. If there is any proof of this, she might even take action.”
A close friend added, “No one in any part of the world look at Ash with culture-specific eyes. Though she has represented India on many international forums she is regarded as a world citizen.”
“She is clearly the global face of the contemporary Indian woman. The last thing she’d want is to have a global image colored by a racial suggestion.”
