Chicago, IL, United States (AHN) – It’s official – Grosvenor Americas leased 50,000 square feet to Topshop in some prime retail space on Chicago’s Michigan Avenue. The London-based retailer’s new address will be 830 N. Michigan Ave.
Topshop will be located next to Columbia Sportswear, Filene’s Basement, Borders, and Ghirardelli Chocolates. It’s smaller than the label’s 90,000-square-foot flagship store on London’s famed Oxford Street, but is still big enough to house the clothes that created Topshop’s following.
Topshop had its first US debut in New York back in 2009. Sir Philip Green, retailer and owner of Topshop, is expanding to Chicago next, and told Women’s Wear Daily that stores in Los Angeles, Miami, Las Vegas and San Francisco are in the works. Each new Topshop in each new city will feature clothing and accessories tailored to the city’s consumer; for example, Chicago’s Topshop might feature more conservative clothing that’s heavier or more winterized for the city’s notorious cold months, and light and loose during the city’s humid summer months.
There is speculation, however, that Topshop might not do as well in Chicago, not for a lack of chic shoppers, but because of the price point. Fashionista.com pointed out that the NYC Topshop is mainly kept in business by tourists. While Chicago has lots of tourists, does it have enough – and the same type of tourists – that will go for Topshop over less expensive competitors, H&M and Forever 21. Both competitors will be just down the street from the new Topshop, too.
Topshop is slated to open in Chicago in late spring, 2011.
