It was on the roof of the Empire Hotel that I discovered the latest collection of Hernan Lander, U.S. designer of Dominican descent who has collaborated with none other than Proenza Schouler, Derek Lam, Ralph Lauren and Donna Karan. He had worked with top designers in the industry, the spring / summer 2011 of Hernan Lander was not up to my expectations. Introducing a disparate collection where the juxtaposition of textures and printed matter was moot, the joining of dramatically different colors would have had to be worked in small doses. Cocktail dresses dominated in mesh and combined with black and white stripes, there was yellow tape that ended up being too powerful to the eye and mismatched. Despite a glaring lack of continuity, Hernan Lander presented beautiful pieces such as geometric and asymmetrical cascaded cardigans and knitted leggings with black white stitching. Although there was a lack of consistency, the shoes also designed by Hernan Lander, were sublime and successful. The designer provided us with too much information in one collection possibly trying to show his originality and his expertise. Having an artistic vision honed and developed by an architectural side, the hope is for more continuity next fall / winter.
