Zang Toi’s fall collection focused on both tailored work clothes and dramatic evening gowns this season. There were some wearable hits, like a purple cocktail dress with sequined shoulders and floor-length grey gown with a dramatic collar, among a handful of misses. The only cohesive part of the collection was the color choice – Toi stuck strictly to black, grey and purple. But a color story is just a color story, and it shouldn’t be the only concept and inspiration for a collection. Toi’s looks were all over the place, and it seemed like he tried to hit upon every trend we’ve seen already. From sequins and fur accents to ombre and velvet, it was all a bit much at times. Add the song “Purple Rain” by Prince on repeat for over 20 minutes during the runway show, and you’ve reached purple overload. Toi would have been better off with a smaller more cohesive collection.
