London, United Kingdom (AHN) – Alexander McQueen, who was named Britain’s fashion designer of the year four times, was found dead in his London apartment Thursday morning. He was 40.
His death was not being treated as suspicious by the Metropolitan Police, according to reports, although it was believed to be a suicide. His family has not yet made a statement.
McQueen was reported to have been distressed by his mother’s death on Feb. 3.
The son of a London taxi driver, McQueen was the designer for fashion house Givenchy for five years. He quit there in 2001 and sold his own label to a Givenchy rival.
A statement on McQueen’s web site confirmed the death, referring to the designer by his first name, Lee:
“On behalf of Lee McQueen’s family, Alexander McQueen today announces the tragic news that Lee McQueen, the founder and designer of the Alexander McQueen brand has been found dead at his home. At this stage it is inappropriate to comment on this tragic news beyond saying that we are devastated and are sharing a sense of shock and grief with Lee’s family.
“Lee’s family has asked for privacy in order to come to terms with this terrible news and we hope the media will respect this.”
