On the official London Fashion Week site Ashish Gupta is quoted as saying his design sigantures are sequins, glamour, and sportswear. Of his inspiriations he says, “summer vacations, holiday romance, and faraway places.” These are Holidays amped up on neon pops of color reminiscent of Miami camp glamour.
The spring 2010 Ashish collection is awash in American branding refrences from nike’s slogan, “Just Do It” and the NYC skyline to our very own Lady Liberty. The best part: The iconic images are beaded and sequined to perfection. His “faraway places” refrences don’t stop at America, he includes tunics that display beaded maps of Africa and Italy. The clothes are loose and breezy which lends effect to his holiday aesthetic. But while the huge sequined ice cream cone (replete with a cherry on top) says frivolity at its most delightful, Gupta added an edge of tougness to the collection.
A few of his pants, jackets and dresses are studded with small, metal spikes. Mad Max goes femme and decides to vacation in Florida! My personal favorite look: the black sequined harem-like pants stamped with hot pink flamingos and bright green plam leaves. Truly a sight for relaxed eyes!
