Los Angeles, CA (CNS) – Katy Perry has blasted reports that she is suing an Australian fashion designer by the name of Katie Perry. The “Hot N Cold” singer says she only sent a notice letter to the designer over trademarking her business.
The Australian newspaper reported earlier this week that the American singer’s lawyers have sent a letter to Katie, who set up a luxury loungewear label two years ago, in a bid to stop her from her trademark application of her Katie Perry clothes.
Katie – who was born Katie Jane Perry and sometimes goes by the name Katie Howell – said in an interview with the website, “I got such a huge shock. It really felt like I was being intimidated and bullied into signing everything away.”
“It asked me to give up the trademark, withdraw sale of my clothes, withdraw any advertising and any websites, and sign that I will not in the future use a similar trademark to Katy Perry. I pretty much burst into tears.”
However, the “I Kissed A Girl” hitmaker’s label, EMI, issued a statement regarding the story, saying that the press had gotten it all wrong.
The statement reads: “A routine notice letter was sent to Ms. Howell, as is customary in trademark practice, alerting her of Ms. Perry’s intended application.”
Katy, the singer, added, “This is a routine trademark application, and I certainly haven’t sued anyone. As usual, some of the press seems to have delighted in creating a story where there is none.”
