New York, NY (CNS) – Belgian fashion designer Dries Van Noten has been announced as the recipient of the Couture Council’s Artistry of Fashion. Described as “one of fashion’s most cerebral designers”, Van Noten will get the award this year.
“His incredible sensitivity to colour, to pattern and to ornamentation – and the way he has searched the world to find crafts people who can do what he wants them to do – is extraordinary,” Valerie Steele, director and chief curator of The Museum at the Fashion Institute of Technology told Vogue.com.
“His clothes are unmistakably his. I think they have made a really important contribution to the history of contemporary fashion,” she added.
Meanwhile, the designer with the eponymous fashion brand, told the magazine that he is happy he will not have to make any big speech at the ceremony as he is not good at it.
“I am very happy with this award, because it is for artistry in fashion, which for me is one of the most important things. It’s the skills, the craftsmanship, the colours and the fabrics I create,” Van Noten added.
The designer, who last year dressed actress Cate Blanchett for the Academy Awards, also won the International Award of the Council of Fashion Designers of America in 2008.
