Detroit, MI (CNS) – Detroit businessman Luke Song has reportedly received more than 5,000 orders for the hat that soul singer Aretha Franklin wore at President Obama’s inauguration earlier this year. Franklin wore gray fur felt hat trimmed with a huge sloping, rhinestone bow.
Song designed a new version, including special spring version, of the giant bow hat for general sale as the actual hat has been donated by Franklin to the Smithsonian museum. The historic hat will remain until being moved to Obama’s presidential library, NME reports.
Song’s business on Woodward Avenue, north of downtown has increased since the inauguration. The businessman now expects his sales to increase from $1 million last year to $6-$7 million dollars this year.
He declines to make a replica of the actual model but makes sure they are available in a variety of pastel colors. The hats are selling for $179 apiece.
“I’m so glad she chose that one,” Song told The New York Times revealing that he had given Franklin three hats to choose from. “It was the one I was pushing her to wear.”
