Tampa, FL (CNS) – It has only been a couple of days since it became public that the Republican National Committee admitted in financial disclosure forms to spending more than $150,000 on clothing, makeup and accessories for Sarah Palin and her family, but Palin is now speaking out, claiming that she doesn’t own the clothing.
Palin initially kept quiet, even as fellow Republicans deemed the purchases embarrassing and excessive, but not for long. The Vice Presidential candidate spoke on Sunday at a rally in Kissimmee, Florida, taking the time to address the “whole clothes thing.”
Palin told the supporters, “Those clothes, they are not my property. Just like the lighting and the staging and everything else that the R.N.C. purchased. I’m not taking them with me. I’m back to wearing my own clothes from my favorite consignment shop in Anchorage, Alaska.” Palin told Fox News in an interview on Thursday that her favorite consignment shop is Out of the Closet in Anchorage and attempted to emphasize her thrifty tastes, saying that she was wearing earrings made by her mother-in-law and a $35 dollar wedding ring she purchased in Hawaii.
A spokesperson for Palin, Tracey Schmitt, also claimed on Sunday that a third of the clothes were returned immediately after the convention.
When Senator John McCain was questioned about the issue by Tom Brokaw on NBC’s “Meet the Press” on Sunday, McCain replied “Look, she lives a frugal life. She and her family are not wealthy. She and her family were thrust into this, and there was some – and some third of that money is given back. The rest will be donated to charity.”
