Washington, DC (CNS) – Republicans’ Vice Presidential bet Sarah Palin’s wardrobe has cost the party more than $150,000, it has been revealed. The campaign and fundraising organization has shelled out the amount on high end clothes and make-up for their candidate.
According to the financial disclosure statements documented by Politico.com, the political party has spent $75,062.63 in a Minneapolis Neiman Marcus for Palin and her family since she was unveiled as John McCain’s running mate. Shopping expenditures to Saks Fifth Avenue in St. Louis and New York also amassed $49,425.74.
The Republican National Committee also paid for the Alaska governor’s hair and make-up that cost $4,716.49 in September.
Those expenses did not appear in RNC”s disclosed records before Palin was named their candidate in August, which raised eyebrows from critics including The Times of London.
The paper notes that Palin has never been photographed in the same outfit twice during the campaign. It also suggests that her husband Todd Palin also benefited from a $5,000 shopping expenditure at the high-end boutique, Atelier.
In response to the criticisms, Tracey Schmitt, spokesperson for the McCain-Palin campaign, released a statement saying, “With all of the important issues facing the country right now, it’s remarkable that we’re spending time talking about pantsuits and blouses. It was always the intent that the clothing go to a charitable purpose after the campaign.”
