Beijing, China (CNS) – It may sound like a cliché but skirts do really attract fans, at least that’s what the International Table Tennis Federation thinks when it comes to drawing sports fans’ interest.
For a sport that the host country is most obsessed with, the players don’t seem to display the same amount of enthusiasm, judging by the outfits they don in the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics. The women, like the male players, wear baggy shirts with complementary baggy shorts. While the uniforms might display comfort, they also scream fashion crime.
The ITTF, table tennis’ governing body, is pushing for players to wear skirts and shirts with more curves, just like the outfits their tennis counterparts wear.
For the table tennis committee, the new more fashionable outfits would attract sports enthusiasts and help the dwindling popularity of the sport.
This is not the first time ITTF has pushed the idea of players wearing skirts. They also promoted a new generation of match jerseys for players, including skirts for the female players, in the World Cup Table Tennis of Women in 2007.
