Does fashion need another capital? Belinda Goldsmith at Reuters thinks that’s exactly what’s happening at Australian Fashion Week right now. In an article posted today at Reuters .com, Goldsmith posits that New York, London, Milan and Paris may have another sibling on the way in the form of Sydney. She touts names like Alex Perry, Lisa Ho, Zimmerman and Sass & Bide and celebrities both American and Australian that are making the event a worthy family member in the fashion week hierarchy. Being run by IMG doesn’t hurt the event, especially considering that IMG runs New York Fashion Week twice a year. Vying for the fifth spot in terms of fashion week are also IMG run Los Angeles and Berlin, Tokyo, Moscow and Toronto Fashion Week. In total Goldsmith estimates that there are approximately 50 fashion weeks held all year. While the jury may be out on Australia’s efforts one thing is for certain: the press is in love with Australian designers showing this season and it may be a matter of time before Sydney does indeed become the Fifth Fashion Capital.
