Last night’s Erin Fetherston show was a little hit-or-miss, though not for the photographers, who flocked to the sides of Anne Hathaway, “Gossip Girl” Blake Lively, stylist Robert Verdi and photographer Nigel Barker. When pressed for questions, most of them kept it light, much like the rest of the show.
The collection came down the runway like a progression of sophistication, moving from retro-mini-prom dresses dotted with sequins and paired with flats, to beautifully elegant gowns in a sheer floral print.
But the line’s best pieces were somewhere in between, punctuated by silk flower headbands and purses for a touch of playfulness. The cape also returned this season, in both streamlined and chunky-knit styles — both very wearable for the fall. The best fabric choice came in the form of cropped blazers and jackets: Textured velvet with deep red woven into a mostly black look. Worn over a layered gold dress, the color combination worked far better than the shiny gold accents put with a muted mauve later.
The show finished with three white wedding-esque gowns, which felt awkwardly tacked on to the end of a very young-looking collection. Though some of the pieces were a little too much like high school in the ‘80s updated for 2008, the overall tone was a refreshing blend of hip and grace.
