The Glitteratti

Samantha Cabrera

Shine on! From the black sequin trousers from Marc Jacobs to the darling sparkle sheaths at Tory Burch, this fall everyone wants to shine. Elements such as grey, jersey, and denim create a playful approach to something usually reserved for evening. Break out of your comfort zone by donning glittering pieces that instantly make you the life of the party. And for those of us so dead-set on our black…there’s always accessories.

The Lanvin flats that have swept the hearts of the tabloid set and fashion insiders alike is back with a fantastic, shining twist. Usually available in plain leathers or with minute detailing, Alber Elbaz brings back his tried-and-true treasures by adding a touch of shine. Adorned with a metal flower, in which small pieces of the material create “petals,” the satin ballerina flats (about $600, monamoore.com) have never looked so stunning.

The theme while shopping this past summer seemed to beg the question, “Is this a shirt or a dress?!” The trend of extra long tops and extra mini-dresses carries over into cooler weather. When paired with tights and flats, the dresses are incredibly wearable and make for an easy transition for dinner and drinks. This foil print version from Lux ($30, urbanoutfitters.com) is available in silver and gold, and can go to the office when paired down by a black sweater coat.

If you asked us a year ago would we ever be caught dead wearing pleather/leather/shimmer leggings, we may have answered, “Huh?” This fall/winter leggings get a much needed makeover. Designers are offering them in an array of colors, and it’s all about texture. For transition, reach for a shining pair like Josh Goot’s black shimmer leggings ($156, Factorypeople.com). In black, the leggings are universal for amping up a cocktail dress or wearing with a giant vintage t-shirt to a house party.

Sometimes looking like you’re ready for the night on the town is all in the accessories. Forever 21, purveyors of all things needed for a night of painting the town red, brings us a chunky bracelet ($6.50, forever21.com) perfect for capturing this season’s bad girl vibe. Wear it with a v-neck t-shirt and skinnies or give a plain shift dress a modern Mod edge.

With fall comes the launch of several new lines, including another fashion outpost from everyone’s favorite fashionable twins called Elizabeth and James. Drawing inspiration from their own wardrobes, both new and vintage, the collection boasts skinny everything and those just-so plaid button-ups. Handsdown our favorite piece is the clever reincarnation of a vintage favorite: the striped sequined dress ($495, neimanmarcus.com). Best suited for a night of bar hopping and dancing on tables, in the real world it works well for dinner or your very own birthday party.
