Rising Stars Shine Bright at the CFDA
Sabah Karimi
Rachel Roy brings us a modern and contemporary collection for the urban woman. Previously the Creative Director for the Women and Children’s Division of Rocawear, the designer has now created her own signature brand. A spirited combination of vintage silks, embroidered detailing, and beaded lace finishes, the pieces are quickly reaching the top ranks in luxury fashion closets. The year’s Fall collection brings us unique necklines and cinch belts in dresses such as the Stacy One Shoulder Dress and widely popular Layla Dress, along with the eye-catching pearlesque fabrics of the Karolina Trench.
Jean Yu is well-recognized for the rich fabrics and seamless designs that come together with architectural detailing. Silk chiffon, charmeuse, and georgette are common themes throughout her collection and Gwen Stefani graced the cover of Vogue in April 2004 wearing one of Jean Yu’s dresses. Lingerie and skintight dresses are the focus of this distinguished label, and the line is currently carried at Barneys and Le Corset in New York, along with boutique stores in Chicago and Tokyo.
This August, the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund Selection Committee also recognized the winner of the fashion fund (CVFF), awarding one emerging American designer with $200,000 and an opportunity to receive expert advice from a mentor in the area’s of business development, production, sales, and marketing. Previous winners of this award include Doo.Ri, Proenza Schouler, and Thom Browne.
The CFDA is a non-profit organization trade organization committed to developing a tight-knit community of talented designers in ever aspect of the fashion industry. Contributions from both veterans and emerging designers are spotlighted throughout the year at sponsored events; the Swarovski award is just one of the lifetime achievement categories, established by Perry Ellis in 1986. Each CFDA inductee has an opportunity to network and grow their business with mentors in the industry as the council continues to provide educational and professional development in both creative and technical aspects of the fashion world. This year’s new recruits can look forward to ongoing support and recognition form the world’s leaders in a globally recognized community.
