Chinese Quality Control

Erin K. Boyle

In an effort to curb the export of labor-intensive, low-cost products, China has made it a requirement for companies to pay a fifty percent deposit on the value of trade taxes on clothing and products to be exported. These preventative efforts to protect the manufacturing industry in China will actually, help safeguard the apparel industry forcing companies to reevaluate their production methods to insure the highest level of quality is used on the imported products. These new methods of quality control are done in an effort to reinstate the somewhat tarnished “Made in China’ stamp.

With these new trade hurdles put in place, China is making a Chanel-like effort to manufacture a quality product. With the onset of Fall Fashion Week, the newest and most innovative ideas will be walking the runway in the largest fashion capitals in the world. At this time, we can safely be reminded of Mademoiselle Chanel and although her standard of quality could never be directly imitated to produce en mass, Chanel’s strict morals for delivering a well-made, quality product, from China or elsewhere, are a goal with which so strive.
