Magic in the Making: VintageFaerie.com Designs Modern Heirlooms
Stephanie Nolasco
While costumers can purchase charms with baby sailors, fading paper moons and magenta blossoms, the most popular ornaments are the celebrated faeries from European postcards. These adorable pixies cast spells in their silk Grecian robs, oversized wings tinted in lavender rose and robin egg and glimmers of mischief in their eyes. Not since the Cottingley Fairies incident in England have people been captivated by photographed sprites decked in glitter or “faerie dust” as Egan coins it. Yet, it’s only natural that her designs emphasize the Victorian era’s popularity for faerie photography. “For some, faeries represent sweetness and simplicity in life. For others, they carry a much personal, if not religious, meaning. Basically, we want to believe. We want to walk into our gardens and
attempt to seek out little winged beings to not only believe, but to know that the earth is sacred and has its secrets.”
Egan herself resembles a traveling gypsy, displaying her lifelong affair with jewelry. Her wrists are elaborately decorated with gold bracelets, including a Pablo Valencia creation engraved in French with her birthstone, a sapphire. “The Creative Muse,” known as No. 131 from her collection, spirals around her forearm with a large aquamarine stone ensuring a safe passage on her travels, as it has done to sailors centuries ago. She also models a heavy chain with numerous photo charms encapsulating her loved ones with a tiny crown, a horseshoe and turquoise. Egan questions whether she should continue explaining the tales behind every piece she wears, knowing there’s not enough hours in a day to disclose the meaning behind each one.
Three years later, VintageFaerie.com remains one of the top jewelers to find handmade treasures that’ll last forever. Egan, now 32, juggles raising her 4-year-old son Aidan, while still managing her online shop, hoping to evolve into a small boutique. “I want to continue making our products personal, thought- provoking and empowering. I want the wearer to know that someone took hours to craft the piece that they adorn themselves with.” Ultimately, Egan wants her shoppers to always cherish their favorite memories. “Why wear a photo charm?” she asks. “Sometimes, little things in life give us all the joy we need.”
