Coutorture: How a Serious Shoe Fetish Can Seriously Harm your Health

Lianne Woolley

And for those who don’t believe that their foot woes can be written off in a prescription pad, there are steps that can be taken in the shoe store to reduce the risk of foot foibles. Experts recommend that women opt for shoes with a rounded or squared off toe box and shorter, chunkier heels. They also suggest that women look for shoes with thicker, shock-absorbing soles to improve comfort, choose leather or microfiber uppers to accommodate the natural size fluctuations that feet incur over the course of the day or as the temperature changes, and ensure that the shoes fit the foot securely to prevent the slippage and friction that can cause blisters.

Think this will leave you in fashion purgatory? Think again. In recent years, brands including Taryn Rose, Cole Haan, Ecco, and Aerosoles have been positioned as comfort shoes for the fashion forward. Indeed, Taryn Rose—who, as an orthopedic surgeon, was inspired to start her own line of shoes that could survive 14-hours of standing and still be stylish—has come out with a number of stylish flats and even a few high(ish) heel styles. Meanwhile, a recent revamp at once stodgy Aerosoles has transformed the brand from one strictly reserved for the over 60 set to an affordable—and surprisingly chic—option for women of all ages.

Despite the possibility of injury, the availability of “sensible alternatives” or the promise of comfort, the bottom line is that for the most part, women are more than willing to suffer for fashion. For some it is viewed as a rite of passage or a personal sacrifice for the pursuit of fashion. And for others, well, they’ll do whatever it takes to keep from becoming the woman who pairs scrunch socks and white Reeboks with power suits in the name of comfort.
