For months and months, it’s all about the dress. Then perhaps reading a magazine or standing at a beauty counter, it occurs to you – it’s all about the makeup!
Whether you’re the type of girl to swipe on some lip gloss on your way out the door or to use two different contour eye shadows every day and change your foundation with the humidity, your bridal beauty look is an important one.
Of course everyone will think you are beautiful and that the term blushing bride had to have been invented for you, but little will they know it was your Cargo blush and Diorshow Powder Brush that did all the work.
A beauty consultation is a great way to try out something new or to perfect your present routine for an extra special wedding day look. If you have a favorite makeup counter or your usual salon offers makeup application, by all means start there. But in either case, you may be limited to one or two brands.
That’s why Papierdoll took our bride-to-be, Denise Robinson, to Sephora, where we could dip our makeup brushes into Too Faced, Smashbox, Lancome, Lorac and more. Color Expert Judy Simpson was our guide from primer to finishing powder.

Judy first asked Denise what type of look she was thinking of for her September 8 wedding, and the two decided on floral colors. After ascertaining Denise’s skin type and usual makeup routine, the two took a walk through the store to pick out products to be used. In doing this, the focus was on waterproof, sweat-proof formulas that would stay put and look nice in photographs.

Some products Judy recommends brides add to their usual arsenal is a primer to help makeup last through the day, products to layer on the lips (liner, lipstick, and lip gloss even if you usually only use one), and a highlighter for brow bones.

At the end of Denise’s consultation Judy went back over everything she had used to create the romantic, luminous look, listed it for us, and even created an easy-to-follow color chart. The products and chart are kept on file at Sephora in case Denise decides in a few months that she can’t live without that eye cream after all and would like to purchase it.
If you have a consultation – makeup or hair – that you’re not happy with, be sure to voice your concerns immediately. That way there’s still time to try a different eye shadow or updo, or even change stylists before the wedding if you need to. And don’t be afraid to do the job yourself if you know what you want and know you can achieve it.
