Interview
The Mad Hatter
Michelle Bell
PD: I think that is really odd because of I were to sit down and watch shows heavy in pop culture, you’d see so many different young artist in music and actors/actresses wearing hats. I think it’s way more important then students realize.
LC: It’s a very particular endeavor in designing clothes and hats which is good about New York City Milliners because they all take a different route. So it depends on the taste level of the culture makers- meaning the stylist to these young stars. If the young stars have enough personality to claim their own individual style that’s one thing, but if the style makers have a particular sense of taste they pull from me or someone else or buy a hat from a street vendor to make look jazzy or stylish.
PD: I see from your website that you grew out of your location and moved into a new larger location some time ago, so there’s definitely a demand. Who buys your hats? Who is a LeahC customer?
LC: Well are biggest clientele are self assured, style savvy, confident women. They are getting married, brides to be are the biggest parts of our clientele. Socialites in the city (New York) who have events to go to. We cater to professional women that run the gamus from lawyers to business women.
PD: Is there anything that you’re particularly excited about that’s coming up in your line?
LC: **laughs** Yes, yes…
PD: Why do you laugh?
LC: Well, we are embarking on quite a couture collection for the season of beautiful and studied featherwork and creat birds and fantasy birds that will be perched on a headband or a hat. This is very whimsical and very studied from the French masters of the turn of the century. So we’re using extraordinary feathers and techniques from the old world and translating them to birds!
PD: How does wearing a hat change a woman?
LC: It’s a concious accessory. If you’re going to wear a hat then you’re going to sort of take on how that hat makes you feel. Some days you may plan your whole outfit around your headwear. Some days you may want to take the look of business, so you exude that you emanate that. That hat makes you feel so powerful or gives you a tailored look. Or you could have a flirtish feeling with one of our coquettish accessories. But mostly you feel beautiful when you wear our headwear and I think it’s because we’re about flattering the women.
