Essentials for the New Year

January 17, 2007

We wave goodbye to yet another year, and another winter of skinny jeans and chunky knits. Make way for the new essentials, handpicked from resort and cruise collections that will take you from the after-holiday vacation to the spring 2007 version of yourself. While old favorites like flats, substantial jewelry and the much-loved (or hated, depending on who you are) sack dress all are back for the second go-around, there’s plenty of room for new faces.

Trade your LBD for a LWD this spring. Keep the billowing sleeves, puff skirts and volume of the old and put it in a fresh, hot color like white. Fendi’s Puffy-Sleeve Cotton dress ($1,240, eluxury.com) is the perfect fit for the new year.

Color was loved for the resort and spring collections, so phase out your drab winter palette of beiges and grays. Look for something short and sweet that can be played up with metallic while on vacation, and taken down a notch with tights and boots while in the city. Missoni’s Alberta Minidress ($1,1450, eluxury.com) does both seamlessly.

Skinny jeans are still going strong on both sides of the pond, but this spring, it’s time to mix it up with a more forgiving silhouette. Citizens of Humanity’s Ava Straight Leg Jean ($154, eluxury.com) is versatile and universally flattering on all body types.

It’s all about prints, prints and more prints this season. Opt for brights anchored by dark backgrounds and easy-to-wear cuts that won’t fuss up your look. T-Bags’ (go-to label for all affordable easy dresses) V-Neck Dress ($212, shopbop.com) is perfect for work, play, travel, and well, pretty much everywhere.

Metallic always kicks things up a notch, and it’s no different this year. While a blinged-out dress is always fun, more practical are stunning, shining accessories. Last year’s favorite, the Fendi B bag ($1,580, eluxury.com), becomes all the more desirable this time around, with its silver or gold metallic leather trim. And here we thought the glam would leave along with the holidays!

Call them the new aviators. Or, since they’re courtesy of Tom Ford, just call them cool. It’s the Farrah ($260.00, eluxury.com) the new shape that your favorite tabloid starlet has most likely been sporting, and it will be just as stylish (if not moreso) on you.
