Cleaning out the Makeup Closet for the New Year

Davina Rodriguez

If every new year brings a sense of renewal then this one should be no different when it comes to makeup and skin. The easiest way to do this is to get rid of barren resolutions and focus on steps that matter. Most women will find that they have made this attempt on several occasions to no avail. This year will be different, right? Right.

There are two things in particular that must be done to get the skin in optimum condition for the new year and throughout. Most have heard them before in different configurations. The truth is the two steps are the simplest things to do:

Step 1: Clean the skin
Step 2: Protect the skin

There is a step before step 1 but it’s such a small one that it goes without saying. It should be said anyway: All the products from last year should be discarded completely. Starting a new slate means getting rid of excess baggage and excess harm. While favorite products can stay if they haven’t been collecting dust for a long time, most will find that it’s simply a matter of throwing everything in the garbage. Once that pre-step is accomplished the real fun begins.

The skin accumulates dirt, build-up and free floating particles in the air. The answer is step 1: cleaning the skin. For the month of January, get rid of all the excess. Do not use soap on the skin simply use a non-abrasive cloth, and a mild cleanser (no oil, no fragrance, no alcohol). Most find that a cleanser like Cetaphil will do the job just right. Within 30 days the skin will start to look better. While there’s always the disclaimer that results vary, it’s back to basics skin care (meaning: no chemicals, no harmful artifical products).

The second step in the renewal process is protecting the skin. Once the skin is washed, it will need daily protection from all that it is subjected to. A water based moisturizer with SPF protection will do the trick in keeping the skin from harmful elements all day. There tons of products on the market that claim to do this, there are even products for products that will aid in “protecting” the skin. Most tests run on these products show zero to minimum results. Anthelios SX is a good product as well as most of the moisturizers from the Philosophy line.

For special skin conditions consult with a dermatologist on the best way to handle your skin this year. The better you take care of it now, the better it will look and feel years from now.
