Makeup Essentials

Samantha Cabrera

You’ve got your leggings, your ankle boots and your bag the size of Jupiter, so clearly you’re prepped for fall, right? Wrong. Makeup is the last crucial step in looking of-the-moment. Because let’s face it, it’s a lot easier to get the season’s “look” with dark nails than it is to plunk down a grand for that elusive waitlisted bag.

All great makeup starts with great skin, so make sure yours is in good condition. Hide blemishes with a concealer and finish with loose powder. Lorac Coverup ($16, sephora.com) comes in a nice variety of colors, and never feels heavy, even at the end of the day. Use Bare Escentuals Mineral Veil ($19, sephora.com) to buff out any imperfections. It always gives a clean, flawless finish even in the most hurried application.

Smeared goth eyes were abundant on the runways. Keep the eye clean with matte liner that won’t smudge or flake. Too Faced Lava Matte ($16.50, sephora.com) is a smooth fat liner that covers the entire area in one swipe.

Go bold this fall with a dark lip. Nowadays, there’s a red for every skin tone. Fair skin tones should opt for reds with blue undertones, while darker tones should stick to plum based reds. Nars Velvet Matte Lip Pencil ($22, sephora.com) boasts a substantial collection of reds from Cruella to Dragon Girl. Remember the finish of the lip is as important as the shade. Glosses or stains work best for day, while matte finishes polish off any evening look.

Nude lips were huge on the runways as well. Find gorgeous shades of nude with gold, peach and bronze undertones, all of which when done in a gloss, channel the patent this season. For ultra made-up lips, look to Nars Lip Lacquer ($22, sephora.com) in Chelsea Girls or Caraibe. If you’re looking for something more lightweight, try Stila Lip Polish ($20, sephora.com) in Glisten or Lacquer. Both gives lips the full, bare pout so eloquently loved this season.

When nude or red lips become a been-there-done-that, amp up your look with the color of the moment: violet. Whether it’s on your nails or lips, find your inner ‘80s child by painting on bright purples. DuWop Venom Gloss in Love-In-A-Mist ($18, sephora.com) is purple without being too opaque, but if you’re looking for maximum color look to Dior Addict Ultra Gloss in A Bunch of Grapes ($23.50, sephora.com). Just be sure to leave the wallflower part of you at home.
