Fall is a great season for makeup. After a few months of heat-induced bare skin and fun springy sheer glosses, it’s time for some serious color. And this fall strong makeup looks are back in a big way.
Elke Von Freudenberg, makeup artist and writer of The Beauty Newsletter and its corresponding blog, sat down to give Papierdoll the rundown for fall ’06.
“Major changes in makeup colors are gray tones in makeup, which are pretty much the strongest look,” Von Freudenberg said. “Gray shadow in the crease of the eye is big, and even grayish pinks on the lips. Lilac pinks, or pinks with an undertone of gray, were used on the cheeks and lips as another strong color palette.”
Chanel’s glitzy Quadra Eyes in Sparkling Satins lights up your eye with shimmer shadows of pink, silver, taupe, and black. Use the grayish silver shade in the crease, as Von Freudenberg suggests, with a lighter color for day, or the black for night. It’s a great season for glamour with this Chanel collection.
For adarker eye, Estee Lauder has lots of the tools you need. Their Pure Color Shadow in Onyx will get you started, and depending on your preference, use Fluidline (not available online) in Charcoal or Pure Color Eyeliner in Pure Black for a liquid line.
Von Freudenberg says to use your black liner a bit differently than in seasons past. “Now, instead of smudged out, the eye liner is more close to the lashes with a very thin line,” she said. She recommends Revlon Colorstay for a black eye pencil that’s smooth to apply and lasts for
But don’t let all those darks get you down.
“My favorite is the new cherry red lip glosses for fall,” Von Freudenberg said. “So beautiful. A dark cherry red lip gloss like Estee
Lauder’s High Gloss in Jewel or L’oreal’s Color Juice in Candy Apple or Cherry on Top.”
As for lipsticks, there’s a brightest bright red out there for everyone. Try Chanel Crème Lipstick in Splendeur or MAC Amplified Creme Lipstick in Rockocco (can’t say enough for how great MAC lipsticks feel on your lips).
And, as the popularity and accessibility of the year-round tan increases, so does the use of bronzers in the fall and winter months.
“Keep your bronzer from spring/summer for fall, though matte bronzers will be strong for the cold season,” Von Freudenberg said. “Instead of using them to create a warm tanned glow on the skin, use them as a contour.”
Aveda has come out with some great Shimmer Accents in terrific bronzy shades. Moonstone, Sunstone and Terrastone, from light to dark, will help you contour cheeks or maintain that tan as long as you
Bronze goes to lips as well, with Aveda’s light shimmery bronze Lip Glaze in Elestial Quartz and Mac’s more dramatically bronze Rev. Bada.
These are just some of the looks that came down the fall runways. If you want to try something different, go for it, but proceed cautiously.
“Just take one look that you like from a [runway] face and do just that one thing,” Von Freudenberg said. “Sometimes just updating one color, or one technique in your makeup can update your whole look.”
