While we think through what we’re buying for fall, we realize there are things that we need. We need slim trousers, we need a big bag, and we need ankle boots. But most of all we need the perfect underpinnings and extras for all of that. This season, you’ll need top on top of top, on top of top! Yes, that many! Prepare for covered legs and fun accessories that add whimsy to fall’s seriously polished mood. It’s all you need to make the darkness feel a little lighter this season.
Tier of tees
As you realize that the looks for fall will require heavy layering, you may find yourself thinking, “Well, I already have all of that!” Rest assured, you do not. Just try layering up with your typical long sleeved t-shirts. You’ll find bulkiness and folds in places you didn’t even know there could be any. Try wearing regular cotton leggings under one of fall’s billowing dresses and you’ll wreck not only the dress, but your look. The gobs of layers that you’ll be wearing for the next few months need to be just the right ones, so that you’re dressed at the core and moving on to fun pieces pronto. No one wants to stand around working basic layering for a solid 10 minutes. Not when you could just take note here and be done with it in fewer than two.
Look for lightweight fabrics that are flattering and slim, without being clingy. While black is the ever popular go-to color, keep your options open. All neutrals balance when put with heavy color, so ivory, various shades of grey and nude all make for perfect picks. Keep tanks long and nab them in loose and slim versions. When choosing short sleeved tees, find ones that are a lightweight enough material to be the base under knits and opt for long sleeved versions in luxe materials like cashmere. Try tops with a jersey/Modal/Tencel blend for giving your wardrobe an update. These fabrics tend to be the most forgiving and also are the most flattering on all figures. Remember long tanks of the draping variety can be worn over leggings with a grandpa cardigan, and long sleeved cashmere t-shirts can be thrown over a wispy summer dress to make it fall appropriate. For short sleeved tees, keep in mind a wide or deep v-neck, which looks super chic when paired with skinny jeans, a cardigan and heels. The most important thing to remember when layering is to keep things simple in fabric, fit and color because the layering is what steals the show.
What the fall runways most surprisingly sported was the return of leggings for the masses. Already worn by girls in the know, leggings have now made their way into mainstream fashion, which makes most either cry with delight or fear. Leggings, footless and regular tights are all an easy way to update your look simply by pulling them on. Leggings fit best under sweater dresses, long sweaters or tunics and even an oversized shirt. Be careful when mixing fabrics. The easiest pair of leggings to deal with will be made of a jersey blend, so the material isn’t as heavy or bulky as a 100% regular cotton pair. Lightweight leggings will rest easier under dresses and sweaters. Footless tights are great under heavier dresses or in the evening when leggings may be too casual. Look for something with a high denier to prevent the look from becoming trashy, and keep in mind that opaque tights also look good. Opaque tights and leggings give a totally different finish, so be sure to keep them with what they best suit. Standard tights work under everything. Dark colors look good with a contrasting shoe, and don’t be afraid to sport them with an open toe shoe if you’re feeling adventurous.
While black is the obvious favorite when choosing leggings, throw a few of colors into the mix for fun. Good options are navy, plum, chocolate brown and darker shades of grey, all of which are flattering and work well under an array of colors.
Belts are becoming the fast way to get dressed. And lucky us, there are gobs to choose from this season. For too long belts have been worn at the hips and slung low, but this fall, it all changes. Belts signify a polished, together look, so finally they’re being worn at, and even above, the waist. Oversized square and circular buckles are the rage, and can be worn over everything from an oxford to a cardigan. Use belts to tie in color on a neutral palette, and don’t shy from detail. The season’s best belts are brimming with features that entice. The point of the belt now is to enhance the female figure, so keep it at the waist to create a clean look.
With the season being full of minimalist pieces, you could have guessed that the gussied up factor would come from accessories. While the boho necklaces of Yore are long over with, you can now look for long necklaces in charming velvets, crystal and chunky gold. It’s all about adding a wow factor to your wardrobe with a stunning necklace or bracelet. And of course, when wearing one huge piece of jewelry, keep others streamlined. Don’t give your look a chance to compete with itself.
