Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you have seen those cyborg people walking around with some kind of robotic device attached to their ear. Relax they’re not robots in disguise they’re just using a Bluetooth headset for their cell phone. The headsets are one of the most common uses of the wireless technology. Most if not all of cell phones manufacturers equip their handsets with Bluetooth now.
What is Bluetooth? I’m glad you asked. It’s a short range communication technology which allows electronics to wirelessly interact with each other. One Bluetooth device can be used with up to seven other devices. The max range between to Bluetooth enabled devices is around 30 feet.
There are some downsides. There have been some security threats. Wireless communications are susceptible to hacking. You may remember the incident when a 17 year old hacked into Paris Hilton’s phone and posted her address book on the web that boasted a celebrity whose who of young Hollywood. To my disappointment, Rosario Dawson’s number wasn’t in the list.
Along with satellite radio and navigation systems, automakers are now getting hip to offering Bluetooth integration into the stereo system which allows you to answer calls wirelessly through your stereo system. That could be a priceless option due to most states passing laws prohibiting cell phone usage while driving without a hands free accessory.
Other examples include an usb adapter that enables you to surf the net on your laptop via your Bluetooth enabled cell phone. Be careful this does use airtime from your mobile plan. There are digital cameras that wirelessly transmit images directly to your equipped computer.
My wish list includes a pair of Bluetooth stereo headphones that not only allow you to wirelessly listen to music on your computer, stereo, or mp3 player, it allows you to answer phone calls with an embedded microphone. The only gripe I have is that the I haven’t found an mp3 player that is Bluetooth enabled. Jabra does have an adapter for the Ipod but I find it to be a bit bulky. It has been rumored that the next generation of Ipods will be fitted with built in Bluetooth.
The possibilities for this technology are endless. Get used to the idea of it making our lives easier with each new device it’s used for. Come out of the cave and get some Bluetooth in your life today.
