Dennis Bailey is not your typical hair stylist. He’s not pretentious, he’s not a primadonna, he’s an artist. Ask him about trends from short hair, to bobs and everything in between and he will tell you exactly what to get. You can walk into his Dabartsnyc salon looking a mess and come out a completely different person. I gush about Dennis because I know about his work first hand. I came to New York hoping to find a hair stylist that was at least as good as my hair stylist slash best friend back home; and now i’ve found better in Dennis. (I hope she’s not reading this)
I asked Dennis to give readers a look into trends for the summer season and he had a lot to say, read on.
what are the biggest trends as far as styles and colors for the spring?
The biggest trends as far as styles and colors are: funky short cuts with interesting shapes,
lots of layering for straight and curly hair to provide interesting texture and movements, light blonds and golden browns and rich reds.
What are the best products to use to protect our hair from spring/summer? (sun, chlorine, etc)?
well, i use a lot of Bed Head products as well as Kera Kare and Organic Roots. Bed Head hair spray , maxxed out, and oil sheen, headrush, are great for the humidity and doesn’t dry the hair out. Kera Kare dry itchy scalp moisturizing shampoo and conditioner are great for the scalp in terms of preventing dryness. Organic Root has some great oils and moisture creams that protect the hair from everyday abuses.
Extensions seem to be a big trend – what do you suggest as far as the type of hair and process for women?
I can’t stress enough the importance of using good hair for your hair exentions. Hair that is custom blended from places like Lugos, Adorables, and Bronx hair supply are pricey but it is worth it. They are less likely to shed, can be reused, feels absolutely natural, and you are guaranteed human hair. You are at your own risk using packaged hair. There are many processes out there from sewing to gluing to clipping in piece to fusing onto individual strands. Make sure what ever process you choose is right for your hair and type of style you are trying to achieve. Consult a professional for their expert advice.
What are a few simple looks that we can do at home to in between salon visits?
In between salon visits there is nothing more upsetting to stylists than to see a woman’s hair looking dry and frizzy. Keep the hair moisturized at all times. Short hair styles just fluff with the fingers and tap the ends with a curling iron for effect and go. For medium to long hair, throw some hot rollers in for about 10 minutes and finger the hair. You can wear loose ponytails to have added effect
