In November of 2004, my partner and I were sitting around and I had an idea. The idea was to create an outlet for young writers to discuss and write their views on fashion, the industry and everything in-between. I being the way that I am, wrote it off, but he said “we can totally do this.” Six months later we introduced Papierdoll.Net. It has been a long, hard journey, but with the efforts of our staff and the support of our fanatical readers, we celebrate our one-year anniversary and I thank you all.
A year of being rejected at fashion shows (then accepted en masse), agencies denying us clothes for photo shoots (then calling us to feature their designers) some hit or miss stories (and very moving pieces) and a continually improving website, this has turned into one of the greatest ventures of my life. Each month we search for ideas that will interest readers and break new ground. We try to step away from the norm in terms of the established fashion media. We have in a year added our blog, savvy shopping site Thriftychick, and our photo site Look; offering more than I ever intended. My partner Sam, constantly crunched numbers and stats to see where we compared, and pushed me to give my all. I never thought I would have a bigger challenge than making a living in New York, but Papierdoll proved that there was. Would I do it over again? I would, and I promise that we will only get better.
That said, the beginning of warmer weather is finally here! Consistently beautiful days and a (hopefully) new attitude are welcomed with open arms. What comes with warm weather? For starters there are trips to the beach, and with the beach not always in reach here in New York, there is always the pool. With these two destinations alone, you will need something to wear. We have some great swimsuits by emerging designers that will have you running to the gym as soon as you log off your computers. We also introduce to you our beloved hair stylist Dennis Bailey who styles not only our shoots, but I as well! Dennis will offer tips for great summer hair and is open to questions from readers starting this month and going forward. We also take a look back at Papierdoll, the covers and features that went from drab to glam. Check out the other great stories and updates throughout the month. Can’t wait to year 2!
