Vivienne Westwood, the queen of punk fashion, was named a Dame of the British Empire this past New Year’s by Queen Elizabeth. The honor makes Westwood the most highly decorated female British fashion designer.
Westwood joins fashion designers Sir Paul Smith, Sir Norman Hartnell and Sir Hardy Amies with high honors from the Queen. Westwood said in a statement, “This is an honor, I think the honor system helps to bind together the fabric of British society.”
In 1992, Westwood received an Order of the British Empire award. During that ceremony Westwood turned to show photographers that she had no skiivies.
