When I took classes at FIT, one of my advisors said, “You should always dress well no matter where you go because you never know who you might run into; and as a stylist that may make or break a job opportunity.” I took what he said to mean that it is good to try to look your best, maybe double-check the mirror when you are leaving in the morning. You will not only look better, but feel better about yourself. That is one of my fashion New Year’s resolutions for 2006 (seeing as though I have already broken my normal ones).
Hopefully your holidays were terrific. Are we all looking forward to what ’06 has in store for our fashion savvy selves? We will soon see the splendid colors and styles from the spring fashion shows walk off the runways and onto the racks at our favorite shops. What is your look going to be this year? Will it be different? A variation on the same, maybe? Whatever the case, I am sure it will be great. I feel like we should move away from so many trends and focus on individuality. Without that individuality, we might as well shop at big box factory department stores.
This month in Papierdoll we look at a variety of new fashions for the new year. If you are unaware by now, we loathe trends. The reasoning is simple really: trends don’t last. They are momentary things that don’t hold against the wind. My perennial trend is to focus on being timeless. With that in mind, we look at several ways to help with that effort. First and foremost is focusing on you, your inner self. You cannot improve outside without looking introspectively. Second is achieving your timeless look. Fashion means achieving your own personal aesthetic. Last, and equally important, is keeping the things you like and disregarding what you don’t. You constantly improve by looking in that mirror and adjusting what needs fixing.
We hope you enjoy all the features this month and come back next month for the premiere of our new photo site, Look.
