The preppy beginnings of Tommy Hilfiger, the sporty, the hip-hop, the rock and roll all add up and then some to Hilfiger’s celebration of 20 years in the industry.
Tommy Hilfiger opened his first store with two friends in high school with $150 and 20 pairs of jeans. In 1985 he moved to Manhattan, launched a menswear line with chinos, navy blazers and button down shirts. Fast forward 20 years later and a lot has changed though much is the same. There is still the dedication to creating comfortable American styles, there is still the usage of red, whites and blues; but present day Tommy is peppered with sexier edgier clothing while maintaining the same DNA of the original line from 20 years ago.
In 1995, he won the Council of Fashion Designers of America Award for best menswear designer. Along with the awards there have been many ups and downs, but one thing has remained consistent: his dedication to the classic American style.
The beginnings came about in the form of oversized shirts and now lead to sexy shirts for women, seersucker and tartan plaids. Hilfiger says, “I’m going forward with nods to the past.”
