The Associated Press is reporting that hurricane katrina victims are getting knockoff versions of Tommy Hilfiger and Yves Saint Laurent product.
Department of Homeland Security spokeswoman Kristi Clemens said that more than 100,000 items were taken from warehouses and more will follow.
The goods are going to help families in desperate need of clothing after being displaced by the hurricane and flooding. The Department of Homeland Security Customs and Border Protection division is looking the other way and even coordinating the giveaway as the items are going to be a big help in the coming weeks and months.
Most of these items come from seized custom raids of counterfeit goods. According to the AP story, counterfeit clothing currently accounts for about 18% of seized items. Counterfeit items come from China, the United Arab Emirates, Pakistan and Russia, according to Customs officials.
