The Associated Press is reporting sluggish sales for July apparel retailers.
Sales at Federated Department Stores Inc., J.C. Penney Co. Inc., Limited Brands Inc., Gap Inc. and Kohl’s Corp were all slow compared to the previous month.
Teen retailers who are usually strong this time of year also had mixed results. Pacific Sunwear of California inc. showed stronger sales while Abercrombie and Fitch posted lower sales.
Complicating matters is a change in shopper’s habits. Shoppers are less likely to shop in advance of a season (fall shopping during the summer).
Retailers have not given up hope yet, the report notes that July is one of the least important shopping months of the year. The month is used to clear out summer stock in preparation for the fall.
